ROCKTIMES - Interview mit Dynamic Lights / Musik oder Wein

RockTimes: Da reden wir nicht drüber, wir trinken mal einen zusammen - nach einem Konzert vielleicht?
Wenn ich richtig informiert bin gibt es Dynamic Lights bereits seit 1997.
Spielt Ihr schon immer in der gleichen Besetzung (Marco Poderi (g), Raffaele Mariotti (b), Matteo Infante (v), Giovanni Bedetti (kb) und Simone DelPivo (d))?
Matteo: Ja, es gab wohl ein paar kleine Besetzungswechsel, aber seit nunmehr fast fünf Jahren gibt es uns im jetzigen Line-up. Die Band ist wie eine zweite Familie und wir sind sehr eng befreundet.

RockTimes: Neben zwei EP's scheint Shape Eure Debut CD zu sein. Wieso dauerte es acht Jahre, bis der erste Longplayer produziert wurde?
Matteo: Den ersten Longplayer hatten wir bereits nach zwei Jahren, aber wie ich eben schon sagte, gibt es uns in der jetzigen Konstellation seit fünf Jahren und in dieser Zeit brachten wir unsere EP "Resurrection" heraus, die ich durchaus als Album bezeichne. Als 'unbekannte' Band haben wir Zeit damit verbracht uns 'bekannt' zu spielen. Konzerte in Italien, Festivals. Wir wollen Dynamic Lights Schritt für Schritt voranbringen. Wenn du gute Musik machst und zufrieden damit bist, spielt Zeit keine große Rolle.

RockTimes: Müssen die Fans auf die nächste CD wieder so lange warten?
Matteo: So lange wollen wir sie nicht warten lassen und in der Tat sind wir schon am schreiben neuer Songs. Wenn "Shape" gut läuft, gut promoted wird, also Reviews, Interviews und natürlich Auftritte kommen, dann werden wir über das nächste Album nachdenken.
Aber jetzt ist erst mal "Shape" dran.

RockTimes: Prog-Rock oder auch Prog-Metal - das ist für die italienische Musikszene eher ungewöhnlich, denke ich.
Natürlich kommt aus Italien jede Menge guter Rock (z.B. W.I.N.D. oder Voodoo Lake), aber auch guter Metal, der jedoch eher in die Power- bzw. Symphonische Richtung geht. Was hat Euch dazu inspiriert, Euch gerade dem Prog Metal zu widmen?
Matteo: Oh ich denke, dass wir gute Prog-Rock Bands haben (Area, PFM, Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso),aber vielleicht hast Du recht damit, dass Italien eher für Powermetal wie Rhapsody oder Labyrinth steht.
Es kommen auch neue Acts wie z.B. Lacuna Coil, vielleicht das Beste, was Italien derzeit zu bieten hat. Und auch die Progszene bietet Neues mit DGM, Empty Tremor, Exawatt, MindKey und natürlich Dynamic Lights. Wir machen einfach die Musik, die uns gefällt und wenn das Prog-Metal ist, dann ist es auch ok. Es gibt keine Barrieren, wenn wir Tracks komponieren und diese Freiheit trägt mit Sicherheit zum progressiven Stil bei.

RockTimes: Welche Resonanz erfahrt ihr mit Eurer Musik in Eurem Heimatland?
Matteo: "Resurection" kam sehr gut an und was wir bisher so an Resonanz erfahren scheint das auch mit "Shape" so zu sein. Wir versuchen unser Album bestmöglich zu promoten und kucken mal wie das klappt. Wir wollen auch touren, damit uns die Leute live sehen und hören können.

RockTimes: Gibt es Vorbilder? Liegen die eher im skandinavischen Bereich? Ich denke da zum Beispiel an Pain Of Salvation oder auch Wolverine.
Matteo: Besondere Vorbilder gibt es eher nicht. Jeder von uns hört seine eigene Lieblingsmusik und der Bogen spannt sich da sehr weit.
Mit Pain Of Salvation haben wir in Mailand zusammen gespielt. Es war fantastisch, auch weil die Jungs als Personen und Musiker großartig sind. Was Wolverine angeht, ich bin mit Stefan dem Sänger befreundet. Außerdem ist er der Freund von Jamina. Wir sind einfach gute Freunde und wenn man die Leute hört, dann ist unser musikalischer Stil auch ähnlich.

RockTimes: Wenn ihr mit Pain Of Salvation verglichen werdet, freut Euch das oder ist es Euch eher unangenehm?
Matteo: Das ehrt uns, da sie eine sehr gute Band sind. Was wir nicht mögen ist, wenn man uns unseren eigenen, originalen Stil nicht anerkennt. Vergleiche sind ok, um die Richtung anzugeben, aber man sollte auch mal etwas tiefer blicken, um die Fähigkeiten einer Band zu sehen und auch wo die Unterschiede liegen.

RockTimes: Voraussetzung für eine gute Prog-Scheibe ist u.a., dass hervorragende Musiker am Werk sind. Das ist bei Euch ganz offensichtlich der Fall.
Seid Ihr Autodidakten oder habt ihr Musikunterricht genommen?
Matteo: Ich habe Musik studiert - habe gerade meinen Abschluß gemacht. Die anderen gehen noch zur Uni. Wir sind alle gute Studenten!
Jeder liebt die Musik und lernte was immer es über das jeweilige Instrument zu lernen gab. Giovanni hat einen klassischen Klavier-Background, Simones Vater ist Jazz Drummer und so war Schlagzeug natürlich von Geburt an ein Thema. Auch Raffaele und Marco spielen seit vielen Jahren ihre Instrumente.

RockTimes: Wer von Euch ist für die Lyrics zuständig? Oder schreibt ihr diese gemeinsam?
Matteo: Die schreibe ich, aber die Band ist natürlich involviert und deren Ideen greife ich dann mit auf.

RockTimes: Woher nehmt ihr Eure Ideen?
Matteo: Inspiration bietet das Leben und jeder aus der Band leistet seinen Beitrag, bringt seine Ideen ein. Irgendeiner hat 'ne Idee, die anderen steuern Eigenes bei - wir legen uns da keinen Zwang auf. Wir überlegen in welcher Richtung der Titel gehen soll und was wir mit ihm ausdrücken wollen.
Wir versuchen immer Text und Musik in Einklang zu bringen, sei es nun eine Geschichte, ein Gedanke, ja auch ein Traum oder etwas, was uns spontan einfällt, wenn wir die Musik hören. Ob das nun was mit der Realität zu tun hat oder nicht: wie bei der Musik legen wir uns auch bei den Texten kein Korsett an.

RockTimes: Ich bin begeistert von der Gitarre in "Remembrances". Oder über den Übergang von "Density" zu "Going To Nowhere". Das finde ich super - wer hat solch geniale Ideen?
Marco: Oh, vielen Dank. Da wir ja gemeinsam schreiben, sind das die Ideen Aller. Ich denke, während der Produktion und dem Mixing von "Shape" wurde wirklich gute Arbeit geleistet.
Ich muss sagen, wir haben in den 'Fear Studios' auch hart gearbeitet, um das Bestmögliche an Sound und Groove herauszuholen. Wir haben genügend Ideen und arbeiten in Teamwork und wie du dir sicher denken kannst sind fünf Köpfe besser als einer oder zwei.

RockTimes: Studioarbeit ist das Eine, live auftreten eine ganz andere Geschichte, zumal bei Euren Titellängen. Wie klappt das denn on stage mit solch langen Tracks? (Ich gestehe, dass ich ein Fan von Titeln jenseits der drei-Minuten-Grenze bin).
Matteo: Studio und Bühne sind gleichermaßen wichtig für eine Band. Es ist wichtig, im Studio gut zu arbeiten, aber das Herz einer Band schlägt on stage. Wir lieben es, live zu spielen, die Atmosphäre zu spüren, unsere Fans zu sehen.....
Üben für 'ne Platte ist gleichzeitig üben für den Liveact, wo wir auch alle Songs der CD spielen. Eine kraftvolle, ja druckvolle Show - das Feeling muss stimmen und wie die Erfahrung zeigt: wir hatten noch nie Probleme, unsere langen Nummern gut rüber zu bringen.

RockTimes: Jamina Jansson hat lediglich beim Opener "In The Hands Of A Siren" die Gastvocals übernommen und hinterlässt einen guten Eindruck. Wieso wurde sie nicht noch mehr integriert?
Matteo: Als ich sie das erste Mail diesen Titel singen hörte, war mir klar, sie muss mit auf das Album. Ich dachte, zu dieser Musik, zum Text - da muss einfach eine weibliche Stimme her.
Ich habe sie zum ersten Mal auf einem Wolverine- Album gehört und war begeistert von ihrer tiefen und warmen Stimme. Es war eine angenehme Überraschung. Also mit meinem Freund Stefan, der ja ihr Freund ist, geredet - und schon klappte es.
Dynamic Lights wollen im momentanen Line-up weitermachen, aber wer weiß.....

RockTimes: Mir selbst hat "Shape" ja auch sehr gut gefallen, was man in meiner Review ja nachlesen kann. Seid Ihr mit den bisherigen Verkaufszahlen zufrieden?
Matteo: Es sieht gut aus, ist aber zum jetzigen Zeitpunkt noch zu früh, um da eine klare Aussage zu machen. Wir hoffen "Shape" kommt bei den Leuten an, so dass unsere Musik überall in der Welt gehört wird.
'DVS Records' gibt uns diese Chance und es läuft schon ganz gut. Wir hoffen auf gute Sells, aber das Wichtigste ist, das man unsere Musik mag, dass viele Leute auch die Möglichkeit bekommen, uns live zu sehen.

RockTimes: Welchen Stellenwert hat Rockmusik in Italien?
Marco: Keine Ahnung, wie das in Resteuropa und in der Welt aussieht, aber ich glaube in Italien ist der Stellenwert nicht so groß. Das macht mich traurig, denn ich betrachte Musik als eine fantastische Möglichkeit Gefühle und Gedanken auszudrücken.
Die Leute sagen hier, dass CDs zu teuer seien - gleichzeitig kaufen sie aber jede Menge teures und nutzloses Zeugs - Hauptsache trendy. Vielleicht haben wir aber auch zuviel kommerzielle Musik. Musik, lieblos gemacht, um Kohle zu verdienen.
Dabei hat doch heutzutage jeder die Möglichkeit sich per Internet und Onlinemagazinen alles Mögliche kostenlos anzuhören und sich über gute Musik zu informieren. Zum Glück gibt es aber immer wieder Menschen, die Musik lieben und neue Bands supporten.

RockTimes: Das ist wohl war. Nun, welche Wünsche habt ihr für die Zukunft?
Matteo: Wir hoffen auf ein gutes Jahr für "Shape" und auch auf gute Live Auftritte. Außerdem freuen wir uns riesig auf das 'ProgPower Festival' mit all den tollen Bands. Wir wollen unsere Musik den Menschen nahebringen, damit sie "Shape" genießen können.

RockTimes: Your are musicians, so I try not to talk about Italian food and red wine, which I'm really a fan of.
Matteo: Hey Ulli, why can't we talk about wine? I am a fan too!

RockTimes: We rather drink some wine together than talking about. Maybe after a show?
When I'm right, Dynamic Lights are founded 1997. Have you always played with the current line-up (Marco Poderi (g), Raffaele Mariotti (b), Matteo Infante (v), Giovanni Bedetti (kb) und Simone DelPivo (d)) ?
Matteo: Yes, we had little changes through the time, but it's almost 5 years we are together with the final and current line up. This is for us like a second family, we are really good friends.

RockTimes: Besides the two EP's it seems that Shape is your debut CD. How comes that it took eight years for the first Longplayer?
Matteo: The first long player came after 2 years, as I said to you before, this line up is together from 5 years, and during this time we have realized our EP "Resurrection" which I consider like an album. Then being an unknown band, we spent the most of time, promoting us, making gigs around Italy and playing in some festivals. We have decided to build this project step by step, paying a lot of attention to every detail. When we are writing and playing good music if we are satisfied with the result, time is just something relative.

RockTimes: What do you think, do your fans have to wait again such a long time for the next CD?
Matteo: Of course, we won't let them wait for such a long time! Indeed we are already writing new compositions and after a good promotion of Shape, with reviews, interviews and most important gigs, we will start to think about the recording of the new album. Now it's really "Shape" time!

RockTimes: From my point of view, Prog Rock or Prog Metal is kind of uncommon for the Italian music scene. Of course, there is a bunch of great Rock coming from Italy. (for instance W.I.N.D. or Voodoo Lake) as well as good metal bands which are more focused in Power Metal or Symphonic Metal. What was your intention playing Prog Metal?
Matteo: I think we have great bands in progressive rock genre, that made and are making a good work all around the world ( Area, PFM, Banco del mutuo soccorso ) so it is not uncommon in this way. But as you said, Italy is probably well known for powermetal bands such as Rhapsody or Labyrinth, who are playing good music for their fans. I think we have new acts coming out also in different type of music, like Lacuna Coil, probably the best product of Italy these days, and this is in a certain way, something we can see also in Progressive Metal scene. We have a lot of new bands who are working hard to get a good attention worldwide like: DGM, Empty Tremor, Exawatt, MindKey and of course Dynamic Lights; and I think that people will start to discover better this national reality very soon. We' ve never started with the intention to play that kind of music instead of another, what I mean is that we just play the music we feel and we love, and if this fits inside progressivemetal genre it's ok for us. We don't put any barriers during the composition of the songs and this freedom is part of the progressive style.

RockTimes: How is the feedback in your homeland ?
Matteo: With our previous EP "Resurrection" it was wonderful, and so far we are receiving very good responses for "Shape". Now we wait to see the overall impressions trying to promote in the best way our album. We are already planning some gigs here in Italy, so the people can see and hear us live as well.

RockTimes: Do you have some idols or paragons and if so, are they Scandinavian Bands? I'm just thinking about Pain of Salvation or Wolverine.
Matteo: We haven't particular idols, every member of the band listens to a different type of music so our personal preferences are really various. We played with Pain of Salvation in Milan, and it was a fantastic night, they are great person and musicians, about the other band I am Stefan's friend, the singer of Wolverine band and also Jamina's boyfriend. They are not our idols, but simply good friends, and people says we probably play more or less the same kind of music!

RockTimes: If people compare you with Pain Of Salvation, do you like that or is it more bothersome?
Matteo: Of course we like that, they are a great band! But of course we don't like when someone cannot understand your originality. So have comparisons with other bands I think it is always good, especially to try to understand the type of music a new band is playing, but you have always to look deeper into a band and find what are their real skills and what make the difference.

RockTimes: A good Prog Rock band absolutely needs brilliant musicians. And that is a strength of your band. Are you autodidacts or did you take lessons?
Matteo: Well, I've studied in the Music Academy for many years and I have just finished my University. All the other guys still going at the University, we are all good students!! Beside that, our main interest and love is the music. Everyone has made his own studies regarding his instrument. Giovanni has a Classical background taking a degree in Piano, Simone has always had the passion for the drums since his father is a jazz-drummer so he grow up in this field, Raffaele like Marco has also made his own studies and they are both playing their instrument from a very long time

RockTimes: Who is responsible for the lyrics, or do you write them together?
Matteo: I am the one who writes the lyrics, I work together with the band, if they have suggestions or comments they get involved into them as well.

RockTimes: Where are your ideas coming from?
Matteo: We get inspiration from everything regarding our life and our experiences. We all write music and every member of the band gives his contribution and his personal touch to the compositions. All the songs started from an idea of each one of us, then everyone gives something to the song, usually we are really free during the composition time. We try to decide what kind of direction the song will take, and what we would like to tell with our music. We always try to write a lyric that fits perfectly with the song and the music - it can be a story or a thought, just a dream or something that comes in mind when we hear the song. It can be related to the real life or not, as for the music we don't put any frontiers to that composition.

RockTimes: I really like the guitar in "Remembrances", or when you switch from "Density" to "Going To Nowhere ". That is great and who is responsible for such genial ideas?
Marco: Ah ah, thank you very much...all the band wrote these songs, so everyone was responsible as me! I think a good job has been done during the production and mixing sessions of Shape. We worked a lot at "Fear Studios" to get the best sound for our style and our groove. We are often full of ideas, and our strength is to write music all together and you know: five minds are better than one or two!

RockTimes: Recording in the studio is one thing, but playing live is the other side. Is it 'easy' to bring your style with that long songs ( I love songs greater than the usual 3 minute songs) live at stage?
Matteo: They are both two important parts of the band's life. Each one has his own shade. We think it's really important to work good during the recording sessions for the creation of an album; but at the same time we think that hit the stage is the heart of a band. We really love to play our music live, and we like the atmosphere you can have looking at your fans. When you are training for the recording of an album you are also training yourself for the live acts. We always try to give a powerful show and we play all the song from the cd, adding a strong impact and a special feeling that live's gig can give you. So far we had no problem playing our long songs, and the response confirmed it.

RockTimes: Jamina Jansson is only singing in the Opener 'In The Hands Of A Siren'. It really sounds great. Why isn't she more integrated?
Matteo: I decided to have Jamina Jansson on our album, since I've heard the first notes of the song "In the hands of a siren". I thought a female vocal part would fit perfectly with the lyrics and the music. I heard her on a Wolverine's album (another band that was under DVS records) and I thought she had a deep and warm voice, really an amazing surprise. Talking with Stefan, my friend and her boyfriend, we realized this could be done. It was just for that song, we are working with this line-up and we want continue in this way, but in the future who knows??

RockTimes: I've reviewed "Shape" and I wrote a very good review since I like it very much. Are you satisfied with the sells by now?
Matteo: It's too early to talk about sales, but so far it seems they are going good. We hope the album will be well accepted by the people and that our music will travel the world. DVS records is giving us this big chance and so far it is working really good for us. We hope to have good album' sales in the coming months, but the most important thing is that people will appreciate our music, maybe getting the possibility to see us live.

RockTimes: How is the local value or the significance of rockmusic in Italy?
Marco: I don't know how is the situation in other European countries and in the rest of the world, but I think in Italy a lot of people don't give any value to the music! I'm really sad for that, because I consider the music a fantastic art and an incredible way to express feelings and ideas...People says cds are too much expensive in Italy, than they buy a lot of expensive and useless objects to follow the trend. Maybe it's because we have a lot of commercial music which has been made to get money, without any passion, but today all the people have the possibility to choose! You can use internet to listen new music, you can read the music web-zine for free and so you can find and choose for real art and high quality music. Fortunately there are still guys that like music and that support new bands: they do the music live again!

RockTimes: What are your wishes for the future?
Matteo: We hope to have a great year, with the cd shape, and live gigs. We are also looking forward to this year ProgPower festival, we are really satisfied to play with those incredible bands. In general we hope to spread our music around the world, and people can enjoy our music.
