ROCKTIMES - Interview mit Robin Beck

RockTimes: Hi Robin, zuerst darf ich sagen, dass es ein großes Vergnügen für mich ist, dieses Interview zu machen.
Es ist eine Zeitlang her, dass ich zum ersten Mal von Dir gehört hatte und es war der gleichnamige Song. Ich habe dieses Lied im Radio gehört und sagte zu mir selbst: Wow, was für eine unglaubliche Stimme. Einige Tage später sah ich Dich im TV und war fasziniert: Eine große Stimme und ein Aussehen wie ein Modell.
In den letzten Jahren haben wir nicht viel von Dir gehört? Warum?
Robin: Ich war ein viel beschäftigtes Mädchen. 1996 begann ein neues Leben für mich. Ich traf meinen Mann James Christian (House Of Lords) und wir entschlossen uns den Bund fürs Leben zu schließen und wurden eine Familie.
Das hat uns etwas auf das Abstellgleis für unsere Karrieren geschoben. Seitdem habe ich einige Projekte mit kleineren Labels gemacht und diese haben irgendwie nicht viel getan…. Dann machte Frontiers mich zu einem Teil ihrer Familie und wir veröffentlichten Do You Miss Me. Dies war für mich der Beginn, wieder in die Melodic Rock-Szene einzusteigen. Nun sind wir beim zweiten Projekt Livin' On A Dream und ich muss sagen ….. das war gewiss eine Weiterentwicklung seit dem letzten Album.

RockTimes: Wenn Du nochmals mit Deiner Karriere anfangen könntest, denkst Du, dass Du es wieder auf dieselbe Weise tun wirst oder gibt es einige Dinge, die man ändern könnte?
Robin: Das Einzige, das wirklich interessiert, war meine Verbindung zum Rock und zum Texten. Ich habe eine neue Inspiration in meinem Leben und dies ist alles in den Songs enthalten, die ich schreibe.
Bevor ich von anderen Produzenten und Labels herumgereicht wurde, die wollten, dass ich "First Time" immer und immer wieder singe und auf der Bühne bringe…. habe ich jetzt die Möglichkeit, mehr als dies zu machen.

RockTimes: Die neue CD "Livin' On A Dream" unterscheidet sich etwas vom letzten Album. Bevorzugst Du mehr die härteren oder die sanfteren Lieder?
Robin: Ich liebe sie alle - so lang wie die Power da ist und die richtige Sensibilität zum Rock, die in jedem Song enthalten ist. Ich bin mit allem zufrieden. Aber es geht nichts über gute arschtretende Rocksongs wie "It's Magic" oder "Love Lies". Danach kannst Du natürlich nicht darauf bestehen "Always" zu singen (lacht).

RockTimes: Wie lautet die eigene Definition Deines Musikstils. Pop Rock, AOR oder Melodic Rock oder nur eine andere Art von Rock'n'Roll?
Robin: Ich würde immer noch sagen, Melodic Rock'n'Roll.

RockTimes: Dieses Album kommt direkter als die anderen, was ist der Grund?
Robin: : Ich weiß nicht was Du damit meinst.
Wenn 'direkter' bedeutet, dass eine gemeinsame Richtung vorhanden ist, dann besteht der Grund darin, dass ich die Entscheidung getroffen habe, meine eigene Musik zu schreiben. Und das ist es, was hauptsächlich alles zusammen hält. Ich denke, dies war die richtige Wahl.

RockTimes: Was bedeutet der Titelsong "Livin' On A Dream"? Gibt es dahinter eine Geschichte?
Robin: Die Geschichte ist .... die Geschichte meines Erfolgs und was ich immer fühlte und was ich jedem neuen Künstler mitteilen will. Du musst an Dich selber glauben und Du musst es so sehr wollen, dass Du dafür sterben willst - im übertragenen Sinne gemeint.

RockTimes: Was meinst Du, ist dein Haupteinfluss als Musiker? Hast Du irgendwelche Vorbilder die Dich beeinflusst haben?
Robin: Ich liebe nur Musik. Ich höre nur das, was mich entweder zum Weinen bringt oder in die Luft springen und dort Luftgitarre spielen lässt. Ich liebe es zu schreien und daher liebe ich Sänger wie Ann Wilson (Heart), Steven Tyler (Aerosmith) und und …Janis Joplin. Ich bin beeinflusst von all den schönen Stimmen, die von irgendjemandem gekommen sind, einschließlich meines Vaters.

RockTimes: Spielst Du irgendwelche Instrumente und ist es einfach für Dich, Songs zu komponieren, die solche Kombinationen von verschiedenen Stimmungen enthalten?
Robin: Ich würde niemals sagen, dass ich ein Instrumentalist bin, aber ich habe Songs am Piano geschrieben. Tatsächlich würde ich mein eigenes Spiel nicht aufnehmen. Normalerweise texte ich in meinem Kopf und oft habe ich zu den Kompositionen von anderen Musikern, mit denen ich arbeite, getextet. So ist dieses Album entstanden.

RockTimes: Der Song " Always" erinnert etwas an die achtziger Jahre und hat ein sehr intensives Feeling. Siehst Du das auch so?
Robin: Ich denke Songs wie "Always" sind zeitlos aber ich weiß, was Du meinst. Er hat diesen hymnischen Rockballadenklang, wie er in den 80ern so populär war.

RockTimes: Was war Dein Lieblingskonzert in den letzten Jahren. Gibt es irgendein Konzert an das Du dich gerne zurückerinnerst?
Robin: Es ist eine Zeitlang her, dass ich bei einem war. Das letzte war Bob Dylan im Rose Bowl und um Dir die Wahrheit zu sagen, der Typ nebenan rauchte ein Kraut, das ich nicht mit meiner Einstellung vereinbaren konnte, daher habe ich das Konzert verlassen. Seit damals kam nichts mehr Erwähnenswertes.

RockTimes: Komponierst oder schreibst Du die Texte während Du auf Tour bist, oder ziehst Du es vor, dies zuhause zu tun?
Robin: Ich kann texten und eine Melodie entsteht in meinem Gehirn mitten auf dem Piccadilly Square. Wenn ich inspiriert werde, kann es überall sein, wo immer ich auch bin.

RockTimes: Gibt es irgendwelche persönlichen Erfahrungen in Deinen Songs?
Robin: Ohne zu persönlich zu werden, würde ich sagen, dass ich jeden Text auf die eine oder andere Art, in meinem Leben selbst erlebt habe.
Aber "Always" kam von einer Karte, die meine Mutter an mich, mit der Widmung »Always, Mom« geschickt hatte.

RockTimes: Denkst Du, dass es die Möglichkeit gibt, Dich live auf der Bühne in Deutschland zu sehen?
Robin: Es gibt immer eine Chance, dass dies passieren kann. Die Planungen sind noch nicht so weit.

RockTimes: Wie sind Deine Pläne bis zum Rest dieses Jahres?
Robin: Ich arbeite mit meinem Mann an der neuen House Of Lords-CD. Ich werde auch mit meiner Tochter Olivia arbeiten, da habe ich eine wahre Inspiration. Sie singt wie... nun, Du wirst es selbst eines Tages hören.

RockTimes: Hi Robin, first I have to say it's a great pleasure for me to do this interview with you.
It's been a while I've heard the first time from you and it was the same titled song. I've listened to this track in the radio and talked to myself: Wow, what a unbelievable voice.
Some days later I saw you on the TV screen and I was fascinated: Great voice and looked like a model.
In the last years we haven't heard from you? Why this?
Robin: I've been a busy girl... In 96, I had a new life emerged for me... I met my husband James Christian and we decided to tie the knot and have a family. Something we both put on the back burner for our careers.
Since then I've done a few projects with some smaller labels and they kinda didn't do much... Then Frontiers made me part of their family and we put out "Do You Miss Me" This was a warm up for me to enter back into the Melodic Rock arena. Now we are on to the second project "Livin' On A Dream" and I must say... there was certainly a growth spurt since the last record.

RockTimes: If you will start again with your career, do you think you will do it again in the same way or are there any things which could be changed?
Robin: The only thing that ever really need to be addressed was my commitment to Rock and to write. I have new inspiration in my life and it's all coming out in the songs that I write. Before I was lead around by other producers and labels that wanted me to keep writing and performing "First Time" over and over again... Now I have the opportunity to be more than that.

RockTimes: Now, your new CD is just out and it shows a mixture of Rock songs and ballads. It's a little bit different to your last album. What do you prefer most the softer or the harder songs?
Robin: I love them all... so long a the power is there and the rock sensibility that belongs in each song, I'm good with it all. But there's nothing like a good kick ass rocker like "It's Magic" or "Love Lies"... After that how can you not love singing "Always" ahhhh!

RockTimes: What's your own definition of your musical Style. Pop Rock, AOR or Melodic Rock or just another kind of Rock'n'Roll?
Robin: I would still have to say Melodic Rock n' Roll.

RockTimes: This album sounds straigther than the other ones. What is the reason?
Robin: I don't get what you mean by that... So if straighter means it has more direction, then the reason is that finally I made the decision to write my own music... and mainly that's what holds it all together. I think this was a choice for the better.

RockTimes: What's the meaning of your title track "Livin' on a dream"? Is there any story behind this track?
Robin: The story is... the story of my success and how I have always felt and what I would tell any new artist. You have to believe in yourself and you have to want it so badly that your willing to die for it... figuratively.

RockTimes: What do you think is your main influence as musician? Do you have any patterns which you have been influenced?
Robin: I just love music. I listen only to the things that make me either wanna cry or jump to my feet and do a silly air guitar figure. I love to scream and so I love Singers like Ann Wilson, Steven Tyler, and and Janis Joplin. I was influenced by the beautiful vocals that came from everyone including my own dad.

RockTimes: Do you play any instruments and is it easy for you to compose songs which shows such a combination of various moods?
Robin: I would never say that I am a player, but I have written songs on the piano. Of course I would not record my own playing. Usually I will write in my head and then there are many times that I have written to tracks created by other musicians that I work with... That's how this record was created.

RockTimes: The song "Always" remembers a little bit of the 1980's and has a very intensive feeling. Do you think the same?
Robin: I thinks songs like "Always" are timeless but I know what you mean. It has that big anthem rock ballad sound that was so popular in the 80's.

RockTimes: What was your favorite concert in the last years. Is there any concert you remember very well?
Robin: It's been a while since I went to one... the last one was Bob Dylan at the Rose Bowl and to tell you the truth the guy in the next box over was smoking something that didn't agree with my personality so I left. I haven't been out to see anyone worth mentioning since then.

RockTimes: Do you compose or write the lyrics during a tour or do you prefer to do it at home?
Robin: I can write a lyric and a melody standing on my head in the middle of Piccadilly Square. It I'm inspired it just come where ever I am.

RockTimes: Are there any personal experiences in your songs?
Robin: Without getting to personal I will say that I have lived every lyric out at one point or another in my life. But "Always" came from a card that my mom sent to me signed ... Always, Mom.

RockTimes: Do you think that there will be a possibility to see you Live on stage in Germany?
Robin: There is always a chance that this will happen... the timing has not been right yet.

RockTimes: What are your plans for the rest of this year?
Robin: I'm working with my husband on the new HOL CD.
I will also be working with my daughter Olivia... now there I have a true inspiration. She sings like... well you'll just have to hear for yourself one day.
