Er singt in einer der großartigsten Prog Metal-Bands des Planeten. Doch seit Jahren verlustiert sich Russell Allen in regelmäßigen Abständen zusammen mit Sängerkollege Jorn Lande auch im Melodic Metal-Bereich. Im Interview anlässlich der neuesten Doppel-Vokal-Platte "The Showdown" hat Russell uns verraten, dass ihm diese Musik mehr bedeutet als 'nur mal zwischendurch'. Interview vom 27.12.2010 Boris Theobald

RockTimes: Hi Russell, erst einmal vielen Dank, dass du dir die Zeit nimmst, die Fragen von RockTimes zu beantworten! The Showdown ist kein bisschen weniger großartig als The Battle und The Revenge es waren - und das, obwohl es eine Art Langstrecken-Projekt ist. Dein Gesang, Jorns Gesang und die Instrumente - alles ist in unterschiedlichen Studios auf verschiedenen Kontinenten aufgenommen worden. Wie gleicht man so einen Nachteil aus?
Russell: Ah, die Wunder der modernen Technik! (lacht) In Wirklichkeit ist das keine große Sache. Wir sind alle sehr professionell und wissen, wie man im digitalen Zeitalter arbeitet. Jeder von uns gibt alles, was er hat - und wenn es zusammenkommt, dann ist es Magie!

RockTimes: Und diese 'magischen' Songs stammen aus der Feder Magnus Karlssons - was bleibt da eigentlich für dich übrig? Wie viel Platz bleibt da noch für ein bisschen Russell Allen?
Russell: Natürlich gibt es immer Platz für Kreativität! Das meiste Material ist großartig! Und wenn ich irgendetwas anders im Ohr habe, dann mache ich das so. Wenn es gar nicht passt, dann hauen wir es weg. Aber viel öfter ist es so, dass alles was wir reinstecken, auch drin bleibt, denn das macht es besonders!

RockTimes: Hast du einen Lieblingssong auf "The Showdown"? Ich muss zugeben, dass ich "Copernicus" liebe, obwohl es ausgerechnet eine Ballade ist ...
Russell: "Copernicus" ist definitiv mein Highlight auf diesem Album. Wegen Songs wie dem habe ich zu diesen Projekten ja gesagt. Ich genieße es, sie zu singen!

RockTimes: Du und Jorn klingt zusammen wie ein gutes Team, trotz der geographischen Entfernung bei den Aufnahmen. Kennt ihr beiden euch persönlich; wart ihr je zusammen auf Tour oder sogar mal zusammen auf einer Bühne?
Russell: Wir haben einander nie wirklich getroffen, nur einmal vor langer Zeit bei einem Konzert im Vorbeigehen hallo gesagt. Unsere Stimmen funktionieren großartig zusammen, und ich hoffe, wir können irgendwann mal zusammen rumhängen ... Mann, das wird die Chance für ein Mörder-Foto (lacht)!

RockTimes: Vergleichen mit den Symphony X-Sachen, bei denen du dir komplexe Texte merken und beim Singen die Rhythem mitzählen musst - ist diese Art von straightem Melodic Rock da sozusagen 'entspannend' für dich?
Russell: Das ist genau der Ausreißer, den ich von Symphony X brauche! Wenn es irgendwie ähnlich wäre, würde es mich nicht interessieren Ich bin in einer der großartigsten Prog Metal-Bands aller Zeiten, und deshalb habe ich kein Interesse, diese Art von Musik mit irgendjemand anderem zu machen. Ich will mich mit verschiedenen Arten von Musik ausdrücken, und dieses Projekt lässt mich genau das machen!

RockTimes: Hast du dich schon immer zu geradlinigem, melodischem Stoff, wie du ihn bei
Allen / Lande machst und zum Teil auf deinem Soloalbum gemacht hast, hingezogen gefühlt, oder ist dir der Gedanke eher erst später gekommen, aus eigenem Antrieb heraus oder weil dich sonst jemand darauf gebracht hat?
Russell: In dieser Art von Musik liegen meine Wurzeln. Ich bin eigentlich ein Rock- und Metal-Sänger. Ich habe mir mit Symphony X einen Namen gemacht, aber ich bin überhaupt kein Proghead. Ich liebe Rush und Yes, aber vor allem, weil sie großartige Songs geschrieben haben, nicht weil sie so versierte Musiker sind. Als Singer/Songwriter bedeutet mir jedes technische Heldentum der Welt gar nichts, wenn der Song beschissen ist.

RockTimes: "Battle" - "Revenge" - "Showdown", der Name des neuen Albums klingt so ein bisschen endgültig, wie ein Abschluss. War das die Folge dieser 'Serie' oder könnte es noch einen weiteren Nachfolger geben?
Russell: Ich weiß von keinen Plänen, noch einen weiteren zu machen, aber ich hab auch nicht gehört, dass wir das nicht tun werden ...

RockTimes: Tut mit leid, ich kann einfach nicht widerstehen, dir noch eine Frage zu Symphony X zu stellen ... ich denke mal, du würdest mir jetzt nichts anderes sagen als dass es ein großartiges Album wird - aber was wird denn anders sein? Neu, besser oder einfach genau so genial wie ... fällt dir da spontan was ein?
Russell: Es wird ein großartiges Album ... (lacht). Aber im Ernst, das wird es! Dieses Album ist wesentlich heavier als alles, was wir bis jetzt gemacht haben. Aber es wird auch das Album, das am stärksten Song-orientiert ist. Wir haben uns viel Mühe gegeben, die Gesangsparts und die Arrangements als Ganzes so gut hinzubekommen, wie wir es nur irgendwie können. Das Album hat ein Mörder-Konzept ... aber bevor es fertig ist, darf ich nicht viel mehr darüber sagen (lacht).

RockTimes: Vielen Dank, Russell, ich hoffe, dass viele Leute "The Showdown" mögen und hoffe, dich bald wieder mit SX sehen zu können!

RockTimes: Hi Russell, first of all thank you for taking the time to answer the questions of RockTimes! The Showdown is not even a bit less awesome than The Battle and The Revenge were. Although it's all a kind of long-distance project - your vocal lines, Jorn's vocal lines and the instruments have been recorded in different studios on different continents. How do you make up for that disadvantage?
Russell: Ah, the wonders of modern technology (laughs) The truth is, it's no big deal. We are all professionals and we understand how to work in the digital era. Each of us puts in the effort and when it all comes together it's magic!

RockTimes: And those 'magic' songs were written by Magnus Karlsson - what is left there for you? How much space was there left for you to put some Russell Allen in there?
Russell: Of course there's always room for creativity. Most of the stuff is great. If I hear something different I'll go for it. If it's not working then we axe it. But, more times then not what we add to the music stays in because that is what makes it special.

RockTimes: Do you have a favorite on "The Showdown"? I must confess, even though it's a ballad actually, I love "Copernicus"...
Russell: Copernicus is definitely the highlight for me on this album. It's because of songs like that I agreed to do these projects. I enjoy singing them.

RockTimes: You and Jorn, you really sound like a good team in spite of the geographic distances - do you know each other personally and have you ever been together on tour or even on stage?
Russell: We've never met. Only said hello in passing at a show once a long time ago. Our voices work great together and I hope we get a chance to hang out one of these days ... Boy, that will be a killer photo op (laughs)!

RockTimes: Tell me, compared to the Symphony X stuff where you have to memorize complex lyrics and count with the measures - is that kind of straight Melodic Rock music sort of 'relaxing' to you?
Russell: It's exactly the kind of departure I need from Symphony X. If it was anything like it I wouldn't be interested. I'm in one of the greatest prog metal bands of all time so I have no interest in doing that kind of music with anyone else. I want to express myself in different kinds of music and this project allows me to do just that.

RockTimes: Have you always had an affection for straight melodic stuff like you do on Allen / Lande and partly on your solo album, or is it rather a thought that crossed your mind later, on your own initiative or on someone's else's?
Russell: This type of music is where my roots are. I'm really a rock/ metal singer. I've made a name for myself with Symphony X but I'm not a proghead at all. I love Rush and Yes, but mostly because they wrote great songs, not because they are technically proficient musicians. As a singer/songwriter all the technical prowess in the world means nothing to me if the song sucks.

RockTimes: "Battle" - "Revenge" - "Showdown", the title of the new record sounds kind of final, ultimate - was it the last one of this 'series' or could there be yet another sequel?
Russell: I don't know of any plans to do another one but I haven't heard that we are not going to do another one either ...

RockTimes: Sorry, I can't resist asking you one question about Symphony X ... I guess you would tell me nothing else but that it's gonna be a great album - but what is going to be different, new, better or just as awesome as ... exactly, any spontaneous idea?
Russell: It's going to be an awesome album ... (laughs). But seriously, it IS! This record is much heavier than anything we've done before but it's also the most 'song-oriented' album we've done. A lot of care went into making the singing parts and the arrangements as a whole the best we could make them. The theme of the album is killer ... But until it's done I can't say much more about it (laughs).
